The Cité de la Mer and Le Redoutable
Set in the former Art Deco transatlantic station, the Cité de la Mer invites you aboard Le Redoutable, France’s first nuclear-powered ballistic submarine, and into a pavilion dedicated to the Titanic, which sailed from Cherbourg in 1912. Deep-sea aquariums, models and guaranteed emotion make this place an original date, perfect for a first shared moment away from clichés.
Grand Roadstead and seafront
The Cherbourg Grand Roadstead, bordered by three dikes totalling more than six kilometres, is one of the largest in the world. On top of Fort du Roule, the Liberation Memorial and its panorama embrace the whole bay as far as Querqueville. Down at sea level, the walk to Collignon beach offers a lovely salty stroll, often with the cries of gulls and the passing of ferries.
Place du Général-de-Gaulle and old town
Place du Général-de-Gaulle, lined by the charming Italian-style theatre and the town hall, is the beating heart of the old town. The pedestrian streets around hold cafés, bistros and the famous Umbrellas of Cherbourg. On Lyad, Cherbourg members share their favourite quays and tables: it is up to you to find someone to taste the next high tide from a pontoon.
